"It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul."
William Earnest Henley
This year will be fun and challenging. This is math class, but we will focus on acquiring and developing the knowledge and skills necessary to be positive contributors to our classroom, school, and broader community, in general. While the core mathematics competencies are at the forefront of all teaching & learning in our class, lessons/assignments will touch on a range of subjects and require students to pull from a broad base of knowledge, skills, and experiences.
My goal is to have students understand how mathematics pervades every aspect of life and enables many everyday experiences, so each student becomes a greater, better informed actor in -- and contributor to -- society.
Pre-AP & Vanguard
The Pre-AP curriculum is designed to prepare students to demonstrate mastery of the 7th Grade Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills requirements. The class adheres to the IB teaching framework and encourages students to think critically and with a global context.
The Vanguard curriculum is designed to prepare students to demonstrate mastery of the 7th & 8th Grade Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills requirements. Generally, this class precedes Algebra. The class adheres to the IB teaching framework and encourages students to think critically and with a global context.
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Program (MYP) emphasizes intellectual challenge. It encourages students aged 11 to 16 to make practical connections between their studies and the real world, preparing them for success in further study and in life. The MYP aims to develop active learners and internationally minded young people who can empathize with others and pursue lives of purpose and meaning. The program empowers students to inquire into a wide range of issues and ideas of significance locally, nationally and globally. The result is young people who are creative, critical and reflective thinkers.

Handouts and assignments are available on Google Classroom. Any time a student is absent, they should get their work from Google Classroom.
A few things we use to facilitate learning and organization.
ClassDojo is a classroom communication app used to track and share student behavior data between teachers and parents. Each class will have a Dojo account, where each student will have a profile. Parents and guardians may request access to stay informed of their child's classroom behavior.
Google Classroom is a web service that allows students to receive classroom materials and submit assignments paperlessly. The interface is somewhat like a chatroom and is only accessible by the teacher and students. Parents and/or guardians are welcome to view the Google Classroom using their student's assigned account.
Any time a student misses class, they will be expected to retrieve their missed handouts and assignments from Google Classroom.
The Smartboard is a tool in our classroom that allows students to interact with data and presentations in fun and creative ways. This hardware/software combination also allows students to engage with content in a manner that provides real-time, accurate feedback to direct and differentiate teacher instruction.
Depending on students' ability to bring their own devices to class and use them appropriately, real-time class feedback data will be acquired through Google Classroom. In the event students cannot bring their own devices and demonstrate an ability to use them responsibly, real-time data will be acquired through Smartboard Clickers.
